Description:Exposures to chemicals used during beet sugar processing and to welding fumes were investigated on August 25 to 27, 1981 and February 17 to 19, 1982 at Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar cooperative (SIC-2063), Renville, Minnesota. Evaluation was requested by a representative of the American Federation of Grain Millers, Local 369, for an unspecified number of workers. Long term personal and area air samples were analyzed
15 workers completed medical questionnaires. Concentrations of hexavalent-chromium (18540299) and nickel (7440020) exceeded respective NIOSH limits of 1.0 micrograms per cubic meter and 0.015 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3). Concentrations of calcium-oxide (1306190) exceeded the OSHA standard of 5mg/m3
no NIOSH standard exists. No exposure hazards were found for bis-chloromethyl-ether (542881), formaldehyde (50000), hydrochloric-acid (7647010), sulfur-dioxide (7446095), carbon-dioxide (124389), chromium (7440473), fluoride (16984488), fumes from iron-oxide (1309371), manganese (7439965) or copper (7440508). Workers reported symptoms of skin and eye irritations and skin burns. The author concludes that exposure hazards exist for hexavalent-chromium, nickel, and calcium-oxide, and suggests that a hazard from ultraviolet radiation may exist during welding operations. He recommends engineering controls, protective clothing, exposure warning systems, education and health programs.
