Description:Worker exposures to formaldehyde (50000) and other aldehydes were surveyed on June 1 to 3, 1982 at the Todd Uniform Company (SIC-2328) in Maury City, Tennessee. The evaluation was requested by the employee who reported skin, eye, and respiratory irritation symptoms. The company employed 60 people. Personal and area air samples were analyzed along with fresh and stored cloth samples. Medical questionnaires and examinations were given to 56 female production workers. For personal breathing zone samples, 8 hour time weighted average formaldehyde concentrations averaged 0.26 parts per million (ppm), and 30 minute duration samples averaged lowest feasible limit. General area air samples contained 0.5ppm formaldehyde. Both fresh and stored cloth samples contained latent formaldehyde. No other aldehydes were found. The medical survey revealed contact dermatitis and conjunctivitis consistent with formaldehyde exposure. The authors conclude that a formaldehyde exposure hazard exists at this company. The recommend the use of improved ventilation and protective barrier creams and clothing.
