Description:Worker exposures to ethyleneimine (151564) were investigated on October 13 and 14, 1982 at Hercules, Incorporated (SIC-2819) in Hopewell, Virginia. The survey was requested by the United Steel Workers of America, Local 13061, on behalf of an unspecified number of workers. Work practices were observed, and personal air samples were analyzed. Workers who used ethyleneimine were trained in handling procedures, and strict control was maintained over access to chemical storage and use areas. Protective clothing and respirators were used. Air concentrations of ethyleneimine ranged from 0.01 to 0.03 milligrams per cubic meter. NIOSH recommends that exposures be kept to the lowest feasible limit. The author concludes that a potential ethyleneimine hazard exists at this site. He recommends continued use of personal protective equipment.
