  Worker exposures to inorganic mercury (7439976) were investigated on September 15, 1982, at the Ohio Thermometer Company (SIC-3820) in Springfield, Ohio. The evaluation was requested by an employer representative of the company on behalf of about 100 workers. Direct reading mercury vapor measurements were taken, and ventilation efficiency also was assessed. Inorganic mercury vapor concentrations ranged from 4 to 145 micrograms per cubic meter, compared to the NIOSH 8-hour time which weighed an average standard 50 micrograms per cubic meter. Residual mercury was seen in cracks of wood floors and worktables. One of three ventilation systems tested provided insufficient air flow. The author concludes that a hazard exists due to inorganic mercury. He recommends improved workplace and personal hygiene, removal of all residual mercury, and immediate cleanup procedures for mercury spills.
