Description:Worker exposures to components contained in animal collagen-based glues were surveyed on July 30, 1981, at Smead Manufacturing Company (SIC-2645) in Locust Grove, Georgia. The evaluation was requested by several employees on behalf of 130 production workers after various health complaints were reported by bracket line and five-piece line workers. Work processes were observed, and 21 employees were questioned about medical symptoms. Air samples and bulk glue samples were analyzed. The glue vapors consisted of methyl- salicylate (119368), o-phenylphenol (90437), and various terpene or terpene derivative compounds. Exposures to methyl-salicylate ranged from 0.4 to 2.0 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3)
no exposure standard exists. No camphene (79925) was found, and the greatest o- phenylphenol concentration was 1.2mg/m3. No sulfur-dioxide (7446095), a possible decomposition product of the heated glue, was found. Workers reported symptoms of headache, throat irritation, dizziness, and eye and skin irritation. The authors conclude that no hazardous exposures exist at this facility. They recommend work practice and engineering controls to reduce glue vapor production, and the use of hand creams to prevent skin irritation.
