Description:Exposures to solvents and acids used in electropolishng of surgical equipment at Synthes Ltd. (SIC-3841), Monument, Colorado, were examined. The evaluation was requested by the Technical Services Manager and was performed on November 17, 1981, and February 10, 1982. One worker operates the electropolisher while the facility employs a total of 100 persons. Airborne concentrations of the solvents and acids in the operation were surveyed. The maximum 8-hour time weighted average (TWA) exposure concentration of 1,1,1- trichloroethane (71556) in both the breathing zone of the electropolisher and in the general area was less than 1 percent of the 1900 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) OSHA standard. The maximum 8-hour TWA concentrations of trichloroethylene (79016) and perchloroethylene (127184) in the breathing zone of the electropolisher were 9 and 24mg/m3, respectively. The equivalent area concentrations were 16 and 50mg/m3, respectively. The breathing zone and area concentrations of phosphoric acid (7664382) were below the detection limit. Nitric acid (7697372) was detected at a concentration of 0.1mg/m3 compared to a NIOSH standard of 5mg/m3. The author concludes that a health hazard did not exist at the time of the survey.
