Description:Exposure to thermal degradation products during the manufacture of automotive wheel nuts was investigated. The survey was requested by the management of Industrial and Automotive Fasteners Incorporated, (SIC-3452), Royal Oak, Michigan. Five workers in the cold forming area were involved. On January 12 and 13, 1982, a walk-through survey, the collection of environmental air and bulk oil samples, and the administration of occupational health questionnaires were undertaken. Analyses of bulk oil samples indicated that in addition to a wide range of aliphatic hydrocarbons, butyl-cellosolve (111762), tetrachloroethylene (127184), toluene (108883), and xylene (1330207) were decomposition products. Total n-alkanes had a maximum value of 6.4 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3). The maximum for toluene was 0.27mg/m3 and 0.81mg/m3 for xylene. These compare to the NIOSH recommended standards of 376mg/m3 for toluene and 435mg/m3 for xylene. Carbon-monoxide (630080) was at 7 parts per million or less or about 20 percent of the NIOSH standard. The only health complaint was occasional burning of the eyes. The authors conclude that no health hazard from thermal decomposition products existed. They recommend limiting exposure to tetracholoroethylene since it is a potential human carcinogen.
