Description:Exposure to noise and diesel exhaust fumes were surveyed on August 26, 1982, at Texas International Airlines, Stapleton International Airport (SIC-4511), Denver, Colorado. An unspecified representative of Teamsters Local 2707, requested the survey for an unspecified number of ground crew personnel. Personal and general area air samples were analyzed for hexane solubles, nitrogen-oxide (10024972) (NO), nitrogen-dioxide (10102440) (NO2), sulfur-dioxide (7446095) (SO2), and carbon-monoxide (124389) (CO). Time weighted average (TWA) noise measurements, noise level and sound pressure readings were taken. Chemical concentrations were all below NIOSH standards of 35 parts per million for CO, 1.8 milligrams per cubic meters (mg/m3) for NO and NO2, and 1.5mg/m3 for SO2. Hexane solubles were not detected
no exposure standard exists. Noise levels ranged from 81 to 91 decibels relative to the A-weighted scale (dBA) for an 8-hour TWA. The NIOSH standard is 85dBA. All workers wore protective hearing devices. The authors conclude that workers at certain gates are exposed to excessive noise levels. They recommend periodic audiometric testing, noise level monitoring, and rigid enforcement of use of hearing protectors.
