Description:Worker exposure to asbestos (1332214) and organic solvents at the Tweddle Litho Company (SIC-2752), St. Clair Shores, Michigan was investigated. The survey was requested by the Graphic Arts International Union and was conducted on July 28 to 30, 1981. The company employs 31 administrative and 36 production workers. There was an absence of asbestos fibers in the personal breathing zone air samples. There were short term exposures to isopropanol (67630) in a range of 33 to 67 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3), to xylene (1330207) in the range of 46 to 118mg/m3, and to petroleum-naphthas (8030306) in the range of 25 to 125mg/m3. None of these exposures exceeded 25 percent of the NIOSH ceiling criterion. (NIOSH: isopropanol, 1968mg/m3

petroleum-naphtha, 1800mg/m3). Printing press operators reported symptoms of dizziness, lightheadedness, and eye irritation. The author concludes that there was no health hazard from airborne exposure to asbestos or organic solvents. The authors suggest that the reported symptoms could result from periodic exposure to organic vapor concentrations with resultant mild acute toxicity.
