  Worker complaints of eye and sinus irritation were investigated on June 18 and July 13, 1982, at the United States Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Service (SIC-9641) in Burlington, Massachusetts. The evaluation was requested by the Service's Safety Committee on behalf of about 125 workers. A walk-through survey of the facility was conducted, and environmental sampling was conducted for the presence of organics and formaldehyde (50000). Workers completed a medical questionnaire. Air samples did not contain detectable amounts of any contaminant. Fresh air flow throughout the building was insufficient. The frequency of reported symptoms was twice as high among workers on the Food Stamp side of the building compared to workers on the Child Nutrition side. More of the workers on the Food Stamp side were smokers. The author concludes that no hazardous chemical exposures exist. The reported symptoms are due to build up of cigarette smoke in the Food Stamp area because of insufficient ventilation. The author recommends improving the flow of fresh air and restricting the areas in which smoking is permitted.
