Description:Occupational exposure to arsenic (7440382) at Globe Battery (SIC- 3691) Bennington, Vermont was evaluated. The evaluation was requested by the United Auto Workers International Union on behalf of 40 production workers and was conducted in November, 1980. Breathing zone and area arsenic concentrations were measured and results were correlated with urine arsenic excretions. Particulate arsenic concentrations in 177 breathing zone samples ranged from nondetectable to 5.1 micrograms per cubic meter. The NIOSH recommended standard for exposure to inorganic arsenic is 2 micrograms per cubic meter for a 15 minute ceiling. Arsine (7784421) concentrations ranged from nondetectable to 49 micrograms per cubic meter compared to a NIOSH recommended exposure standard of 2 micrograms per cubic meter. Arsenic-trioxide (1327533) vapor concentrations ranged from nondetectable to 0.44 micrograms per cubic meter. No standards are given. About 20 percent of production workers had urine arsenic concentrations of 50 micrograms per liter or above. High urine concentrations correlated with arsine exposures above 15.6 micrograms per cubic meter. The authors conclude that workers are exposed to airborne particulate arsenic and to arsenic-trioxide vapor. They are exposed to arsine gas at concentrations above the NIOSH standard. The arsine exposures are sufficient to cause increased absorption and urinary excretion. The authors recommend improved ventilation to reduce exposures.
