  Health problems among 100 workers at the Dittler Brothers film facility (SIC-2750), Atlanta, Georgia were evaluated. Survey was requested by the Atlanta Typographical Union Number 48 because of reported health problems: dermatitis, energy and appetite loss, anemia, and leukemia. The field investigation was conducted on September 17, 1981. The majority of dermatitis complaints came from the composing room. Air samples for 23 organic compounds were taken in the composing room and at two other sites. Vapor concentrations were fairly evenly distributed regardless of site. Isopropanol (67630) was detected in 21 of 23 samples in concentrations ranging from 6 to 211 parts per million (ppm). The 8-hour time weighted average limit is 400ppm. Benzene (71432) exceeded 1ppm in five air samples, with the highest concentration being 2.4ppm. The NIOSH standard is 1ppm for a 2-hour time weighted average. Acetic acid (64197) was detected in 6 of 13 samples in concentrations ranging from 1.6 to 6.1ppm. The 8-hour time weighted limit is 10ppm. One case of leukemia was identified. Five other current or former employees had illness possibly associated with work. The authors conclude that the case of leukemia cannot be reasonably inferred to have resulted from solvent chemical exposure. Since some of the facility's processes expose workers to solvent vapors or particulate matter, skin irritation may result. The authors suggest improved ventilation and the use of solvents containing less than 1 percent benzene.
