  Complaints of neurologic and irritative symptoms associated with a vapor degreaser solvent at the Syntrex Corporation (SIC-3679), Eatontown, New Jersey were investigated. The evaluation was requested by employees. About 15 workers were employed near the vapor degreaser at the printed circuit board production facility. In August of 1981, an environmental and medical evaluation was conducted. Five personal air samples were analyzed in the degreaser process. Isopropanol (67630) concentrations ranged from 2.4 to 9.3 parts per million (ppm) compared to a NIOSH standard of 400ppm. Trichlorotrifluoroethane (76131) concentrations ranged from 7.2 to 26.1ppm compared to a NIOSH criteria of 1000ppm. 1,1,1- Trichloroethane (71556) concentrations ranged from 14.4 to 57.2ppm compared to a NIOSH standard of 350ppm. Four of five degreaser operators reported neurological and irritative symptoms such as headaches, upset stomach, burning eyes, and lightheadedness. The authors conclude that although the exposures to solvents were below evaluation criteria, the employees were experiencing health complaints consistent with the known effects of degreasing chemicals used at the facility. The authors recommend good work practices, improved ventilation, and design changes to reduce skin and inhalation exposure.
