Description:Potential adverse health effects resulting from chemical exposures in the pressroom of the Reporter Printing Company (SIC-2711), Fond du Lac, Wisconsin were investigated. The study was requested by the Neenah-Menasha Printing Pressmen and Assistants Union, Local 298, and was performed in June and September of 1981. Personal and area air samples were collected and medical questionnaires were administered. At the time of the survey the company employed about 100 workers, 5 of whom were pressmen involved in the operation of the offset printing press. Short term concentrations for acetic- acid (64197) in personal samples were 0.085 parts per million (ppm) and 0.68ppm. The 8 hour time weighted average (TWA) concentrations were 0.12 and 0.04ppm compared to an OSHA TWA of 10ppm. Short term concentrations for cyclohexanone (108941) in personal samples were 1.10 and 0.89ppm. The 8 hour TWA concentrations were 0.15 and aromatic hydrocarbons in the black printing ink and no benzene in the solvent mixture. Medical interviews did not identify any health problems associated with workplace exposures. The author concludes that no hazard to pressroom employees existed due to chemical exposures.
