Description:A walk through survey was conducted at the Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation (SIC-3363) in Ravenswood, West Virginia, on February 1, March 31 and April 1, and September 21 and 22, 1981. Samples of rolling oils, oil mists and solvents were taken. Air samples were also taken to determine asbestos (1332214) exposure. The survey was requested by an authorized representative of Local 5668, United Steel Workers of America on behalf of 1,418 hourly employees. Mean personal breathing zone exposure to formaldehyde (50000) was 0.024 milligrams per cubic meters (mg/m3) and area concentration was 0.010mg/m3 (no NIOSH standard). Exposures to stoddard-solvent (8052413), kerosene (8008206), and asbestos were well below NIOSH standards. Oil mist concentration was 1.3mg/m3
the ACGIH standard is 5mg/m3. NIOSH determined that no health hazard from exposure to rolling oils, stoddard-solvent, asbestos, or formaldehyde exists. Possible overexposures to kerosene exist in the Foil Department. The investigators recommend improved housekeeping, evaluation of exhaust system effectiveness, and replacement of insulation that contains asbestos.
