Description:Personal air samples were analyzed for nitrous-oxide (10024972) (N2O), ethylene-oxide (75218) (ETO), halothane (151677), and cyclopropane (75194) on November 23 and 24, 1981 at the Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital (SIC-2519), New York, New York. The request was submitted by District 1199 National Union of Hospital and Health Care Employees on behalf of 80 staff members assigned to operating rooms, recovery rooms, and central supply. A questionnaire was administered to determine health, occupational, and reproductive history, as well as symptoms related to exposures to anesthetics. N20 exposures were from 30 to 144 parts per million (ppm) in excess of the NIOSH standard of 25ppm. Halothane ranged from 0.15 to 3.51ppm with a NIOSH standard of 0.50ppm. Concentrations of ETO were between 4.0 and 66.7ppm with NIOSH recommendations that concentrations be the lowest possible. There was no significant increase in spontaneous abortion nor involuntary infertility. Symptoms included headache, fatigue, and skin and throat irritation. The authors recommend replacement of cryo machines, installation of waste gas scavenging equipment, and proper work practices.
