Description:A medical and environmental survey was conducted to determine worker exposures to ozone (10028156) and welding fumes at the Goodyear Aerospace Corporation in Akron, Ohio on November 23 and 24, 1981. The survey was requested by Local 856 of United Auto Workers on behalf of an unspecified number of welders. Medical questionnaires and urine analyses were administered to 10 welders and 10 nonwelders as a comparison. The OSHA standard for ozone exposures is 0.1 part per million (ppm) over an 8 hour time weighted average. The mean ozone exposure in the sampled area was 0.054ppm and ranged from 0.024 to 0.157ppm. Exposures to cadmium (7440439) ranged from 1 to 739 micrograms per cubic meter (microg/m3) and for nickel (7440020) 4 to 54microg/m3. The OSHA standards are 100microg/m3 and 1000microg/m3 for cadmium and nickel, respectively. A significantly greater number of welders reported eye irritation and headaches than did nonwelders. Urinalyses were within normal limits. The authors conclude that there are occasional overexposures to ozone, cadmium, and nickel. They recommend better ventilation and monitoring of worker exposures.
