Description:Personal and area sampling was conducted for dinitrotoluene (121142) (DNT) and toluene-diamine (25376458) (TDA) at Olin Chemical Company (SIC-2821), Moundsville, West Virginia, on June 4 and 5, 1981. Follow-up medical and industrial hygiene surveys were performed during September 1981. Evaluation was requested by the International Chemical Workers Union for members of Local 839. A questionnaire was administered to 52 male workers for work history, tobacco and alcohol use, medical history, and reproductive status. A physical examination was also conducted. TDA ranged from below detectable limits to 687 micrograms per cubic meter (microg/m3) (No OSHA standard). The OSHA standard for DNT is 1500microg/m3
exposures ranged from 26 to 890microg/m3. A higher rate of reproductive problems, such as miscarriages were reported. There were no biological indications of current reproductive problems and no significant differences in laboratory tests between workers and comparisons. The authors recommend control of fugitive emissions from equipment and removal of residual products. Air intake should be avoided near potential sources of contamination, and work areas should be under positive air pressure. Exposures should be monitored, and personal protection equipment kept available. Continuing education programs for workers are recommended.
