Description:A survey was conducted to determine employee exposure to solvents at the Metropolitan Opera (SIC-3999), New York, New York, on February 25, 1982. The survey was requested by management on behalf of six to eight artisans in the properties shop. Breathing zone and area samples were collected for toluene (108883), xylene (1330207), acetone (67641), n-hexane (110543), and styrene (100425). The workers in the shop were exposed to very low concentrations of solvents during typical operations. However, exposures could be higher during construction of large props or when additional workers are involved. The author recommends that employees be instructed in use and care of respirators. He suggests fit testing for evaluating the leakage of contaminant into the workers breathing zone.
