Description:Industrial hygiene and medical surveys were conducted, and breathing zone air samples collected at the Neoplan USA Corporation (SIC- 3713), Lamar, Colorado, on March 9 and May 11, 1982, to evaluate the health hazard of zinc-oxide (1314132) fumes. The evaluation was requested by the management on behalf of 17 welding workers. Samples were collected for silver (7440224) and cadmium (7440439) as well as zinc-oxide. The OSHA standards are: 0.1 milligram per cubic meter (mg/m3) for zinc-oxide
0.01mg/m3 for silver
and 5.0mg/m3 for cadmium. An initial measurement for zinc-oxide was 6.4mg/m3
however, on follow-up it was well within evaluation criteria, as were silver and cadmium concentrations. Medic interviews revealed effects from zinc-oxide fumes of upper respiratory tract irritation, cough, headache, nausea, chills, sweating, fever, and a metallic taste in the mouth. The authors conclude that there was a hazard from zinc-oxide fumes which was corrected by the time of the follow-up survey. They recommend discontinued use of zinc primed metal in welding, use of respirators, education on the hazards of zinc-oxide fumes, increased masking of buses before painting, and local exhaust ventilation of the welding plume.
