Description:An environmental survey was conducted to evaluate health hazards from exposure to nitrous-oxide (10024972) and mercury (7439976) at West Gate Dental Clinic (SIC-8021) in Cheyenne, Wyoming, on March 30, 1982. The survey was requested by a dental assistant at the clinic. Work practices and techniques were reviewed, and employees were formally interviewed. Breathing zone and area air samples were collected. Mercury concentrations were below the NIOSH time weighted average for 8 hours of 0.05 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) and the OSHA ceiling of 0.1mg/m3. Samples of nitrous oxide ranged from 400 to 1000 parts per million (ppm), which far exceeded the NIOSH criteria of 25ppm. The author concludes that the personnel are overexposed to nitrous oxide. He recommends a scavenging system for nitrous-oxide, maintenance of anesthetic and suction equipment, education of personnel as to adverse effects of nitrous-oxide exposure, additional ventilation equipment, and a follow-up environmental evaluation.
