  An environmental evaluation was conducted to determine employee exposures to formaldehyde (50000) at American Medical Supply D.B.A., Community Dialysis Services of Denver (SIC-8091), in Denver, Colorado on March 13 and 14, 1982. The survey was requested by management on behalf of an unspecified number of workers. Breathing zone and room air samples were taken. The 8-hour time weighted exposure standard set by OSHA is 4.5 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3). Of the 10 samples taken, 2 exceeded NIOSH criteria of 1.2mg/m3 for a 30-minute sampling period. The author concludes that a health hazard from formaldehyde exists. He recommends worker education on the health effects of formaldehyde, and ventilation of the sterilization area. The room should be vacated while sterilization is taking place.
