Description:Ceiling materials were evaluated for asbestos (1332214) content in classrooms at Wilmington High School (SIC-8211), Wilmington, Ohio, on April 9, 1982. The evaluation request came from the business manager of the school on behalf of 2,200 students, teachers, and employees. Bulk samples of ceiling materials and particulate air samples were analyzed. The bulk samples indicated that eight of nine ceilings contained 20 to 30 percent chrysotile asbestos. No asbestos fibers were found in air samples. The author concludes that students, teachers, and staff are not exposed to airborne asbestos fibers. As long as the ceiling tiles remain uncompromised, no health hazard exists. If the integrity becomes compromised, appropriate sealants should be used, and in the event of installation or destruction of the ceilings, protective equipment should be used.
