Description:Environmental conditions at Corhart Refractory (SIC-3297), Louisville, Kentucky were evaluated. About 130 workers produce refractory bricks. Ten years before, reports of transient eye, nose, and throat irritation complaints were examined. NIOSH visited the refractory in September, 1981 and conducted a followup in October, 1981 which was requested by an employee. Environmental samples were taken for phenol (108952), formaldehyde (50000), methylene-bisphenyl-diisocyanate (101688) (MDI), aromatic hydrocarbons, and unknown organics. Employee interviews were also conducted. Formaldehyde concentrations were nondetectable to 0.64 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3). NIOSH recommends exposure to formaldehyde be kept as low as possible. Exposures to MDI were nondetectable to 0.0068mg/m3. (NIOSH criteria: 0.20mg/m3). Exposures to phenol were nondetectable to 0.64mg/m3 (NIOSH criteria: 19mg/m3). Compared to shipping and clerical workers, employees of the No Bake Mold Department had significantly higher prevalence of nose, throat, skin, and eye irritation. There was no association between cancer deaths and past workplace exposures at the Corhart facility. The authors conclude that current health effects are mild, transient, and probably related to formaldehyde exposure combined with the effects from low concentrations of phenol and MDI.
