Description:Potential health hazards from exposures to methyl-methacrylate (80626) (MMC) used in the preparation of shoe inserts at the Colorado Foot Clinic (SIC-8049), Denver, Colorado were investigated. Employees requested the study which was conducted on July 13, 1982. Three breathing zone and three general room air samples for measurement of MMC were analyzed. Values ranged from 17 to 417 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) compared to an OSHA 8-hour time weighted evaluation criteria of 410mg/m3. Three workers exposed to MMC reported periodic headaches and one complained of nausea. The exhaust fan was insufficient to remove MMC vapors. The authors conclude that a health hazard did exist from exposure to MMC. The authors suggest that a larger exhaust ventilation hood with slot ventilation at a larger worktable would eliminate drawing the MMC vapors through the worker's breathing zone.
