  Employee complaints of eye, nose, and throat irritation, coating of the skin, and occasional offensive odors at Computer Services of Roanoke (SIC-7374), Roanoke, Virginia were investigated. The company requested the study which was performed on November 10 and 11, 1981. About 13 workers are employed in the computer section of the office. Interviews with employees indicated the presence of the problems originally reported plus occasional skin rashes and headaches. Thirteen area air samples were analyzed and no formaldehyde nor 22 other vapors were detected. No fresh air was circulated in the computer area and the entire area was under negative pressure. The authors suggest that no specific cause or source of the reported symptoms was discovered. The absence of fresh air supply and the negative pressure in the area possibly permits incursion of sewage gases and unfiltered outside air. Recommendations of proper ventilation units, particulate filters, use of odorants, and appropriate pressure conditions are offered.
