Description:Employee complaints of headaches, lightheadedness, nausea, and diarrhea at the Charleston Laboratory (SIC-7391), National Marine Fisheries Service, Charleston, South Carolina were investigated. The study was requested by several employees and was performed on August 4, 1981. The lab employs about 65 workers. Personal and area air samples were collected, the facility was inspected, and employees were interviewed. Of a variety of substances sampled only chloroform (67663) was detected and it was below the NIOSH recommended limit of 2 parts per million. Laboratory hood face velocities were adequate. No asbestos was detected on ceiling insulation; however, scrapings from Transite panels had 20 to 30 percent chrysotile-asbestos (12001295). Of eight employees interviewed, three complained of health effects including eye and skin irritation, nervousness, and fatigue which they believed were work related. The author concludes that exposures to toxic vapors from chemicals used in the labs are not significant as long as these chemicals are used inside the laboratory hoods provided.
