Description:Potential health hazards to chemicals used in the phenolic urethane no bake binder system, in mold making and in the breakdown products of the binder system released during the pouring of the castings at the Gerlinger Casting Corp. (SIC-3221), Salem, Oregon were evaluated. Local 139 of the International Molders and Allied Workers requested the study which was performed January 22, and June 23 and 24, 1981. There were five employees in the molding area and three in the pouring area. Exposures to pyridine (110861) and 4- phenyl-propylpyridine (2057490) had a combined average exposure of 7.0 parts per million (ppm) in the molding area. The OSHA evaluation criteria for a 10-hour time weighted average for pyridine is 5ppm. It is felt that the same value should apply to 4-phenyl- propylpyridine. In the pouring area, the combined exposure was 140 percent of the evaluation criterion. One pourer developed a cough during the workday. The employees involved in the molding operation experienced burning and itching of the eyes, and nose and throat irritation at certain times. The author concludes that employees were exposed to toxic concentrations of pyridine and 4- phenyl-propylpyridine during the manufacturing process. Recommendations involving local exhaust ventilation and personal protective clothing are provided.
