Description:Concern about upper respiratory irritation among workers at the Ohio Bell Switching Office (SIC-4811), Boardman, Ohio was investigated. Ohio Bell requested the study which was conducted on April 29, 1982. Six employees work at the office. An environmental and medical evaluation was conducted. Relative humidity in the office averaged 15 percent, below the 30 to 60 percent values recommended by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers. Ozone (10028156) concentrations were 0.02 parts per million (ppm) compared to the OSHA standard of 0.1ppm. The most frequent worker symptoms were soreness of the throat and nose and nasal and sinus congestion. These symptoms resolved when employees were away from work. The authors conclude that employees were exposed to exceptionally dry conditions which could contribute to upper respiratory irritation. The authors recommend that a humidification unit be installed in the ventilation system.
