Description:Exposure to formaldehyde (50000), epichlorohydrin (106898), dimethylamine (124403), ammonia (7664417), hydrochloric-acid (7647010), styrene (100425), maleic-anhydride (108316), acrylamide (79061), sulfuric-acid (7664939) and bis(chloromethyl)ether (542881) and the reportedly high rate of worker disabilities were investigated. Local 7-220 of the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union requested the study at the American Cyanamid Company (SIC-2810), Kalamazoo, Michigan. Environmental, epidemiologic, and control technology assessments were performed in September 1980 and January 1981. Formaldehyde was found in concentrations of 0.04 to 1.91 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3). NIOSH recommends the lowest feasible limit for formaldehyde. Concentrations of dimethylamine peaked at 0.63mg/m3, well below the OSHA standard. The control technology for batch process equipment was inadequate. Chemical leaks from seals and fittings in several reactor kettles caused peak exposure during initial batch mixing. There was no abnormal pattern of disabilities by type, but the overall rate was 4 times the rate for Social Security disabilities in Michigan. Occupational causes for these rate differences were not evident. The authors conclude that a potential health hazard from overexposure to formaldehyde and dimethylamine may exist due to equipment malfunction and leaks. Maintenance programs, proper ventilation, continuous monitoring and respiratory protection are recommended.
