  An authorized representative of Cobe Laboratories (SIC-3841), Cranbury, New Jersey, requested a health hazard evaluation to investigate employee exposure to airborne concentrations of xylene (1330207), and butylated-hydroxy-toluene (BHT) at the Renalyte operation. The operation was designed to package Renalyte (used by kidney dialysis patients) in 1-gallon plastic containers. At the start of the operation, a labeling machine affixed a label to each container using a hot melt glue. The rollers of the labeler were cleaned with xylene and BHT from a pressurized can. The study was performed on July 27 and 28, 1982. Concentrations of xylene in personal breathing air samples ranged from below the limits of detection to 2.5 milligram per cubic meter, as compared to the NIOSH standard of 436 milligrams per cubic meter as a 10-hour time weighted average. The air concentrations of BHT were less than the limit of detection of 0.01 milligram per sample. The author concludes that no health hazard was identified at the time of the survey.
