Description:

Employee complaints of sore throats, eye and nose irritation, headaches, itching skin, and excessive fatigue at the Timber Lake Manufacturing Corporation (SIC-2329 and SIC-2339), Alton, New Hampshire were investigated. Twenty-two employees, mostly from the stitching shop, registered the majority of the complaints. The study was requested by management and environmental measurements were performed between May and August, 1980. Complaints had occurred after the manufacturing building had been flooded with raw sewage. Symptoms began 2 days after the sewage had been treated with a disinfectant. Trace amounts of 1,1,1-trichloroethane (71556), hexachloroethane (67721), and various alkanes were found. The author concludes that the causative agent responsible for employee complaints could not be identified. The author suggests that the source of the medical complaints was unrelated to the work site or the manufacturing process. This determination was made since symptoms disappeared after the company relocated. The chemicals used to treat the sewage spill probably caused the employee complaints.
