Health Hazard Evaluation Report: HETA-80-039-1179: Long Island Railroad; New York

  Excess numbers of birth defects among maintenance employees for the Long Island Railroad (SIC-4010) were investigated. The study was requested by the Teamsters Local 808, Woodside, Queens, New York on behalf of 800 employees who performed track maintenance operations. In the course of maintenance activities, workers came into contact with the herbicide 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic-acid (93765) (2,4,5- T). A list of all live births among union members who worked for the railroad was collected and analyzed. A total of 170 live births were observed among the study population. Forty-two had at least one noninfectious health problem during the first year of life. All major birth defects were underrepresented in the study population. Metatarsus adductus and tear duct obstruction were significantly overrepresented in the study population. These defects may have been due to a diagnostic bias. The author concludes that no definite excess of birth defects related to herbicide exposure was found. The author recommends that exposure to 2,4,5-T be controlled.
