Description:The apparent high incidence of cancer among workers at the Ridgeway Color Company (SIC-2865), Ridgeway, Pennsylvania was investigated. The study was requested by Local 13694 of the United States Steel Workers of America and was performed on September 15 to 16 and December 16 to 17, 1981. Ridgeway employs about 140 workers, including 100 production workers. Medical and environmental evaluations were performed. Fifty nine percent of the interviewed workers reported more than five episodes of eye irritation during the prior year; 55 percent had more than five episodes of nasal irritation. An unusual rate of death from cancer was not detected. No 3,3'-dichlorobenzidine (91941) (DCB), a suspect carcinogen that had previously been handled at the site, was found in workers' urine or in workplace air. Contamination of chemical intermediates with known or suspect carcinogens was low. The authors conclude that cancer mortality at the facility utilizing DCB as not excessive and no cases of bladder cancer were found. They recommend improved ventilation, proper disposal and storage of respirators, proper personal hygiene and collection of death certificates.
