Description:Potential hazardous chemical exposures caused by the heat transfer of rubber ink labels onto garments were investigated at Tahoe Designs (SIC-2751), Tahoe City, California. Management requested the study before the facility relocated to the Tahoe City site. It was performed in April and June, 1981. The heat transfer operation was normally performed by one to three employees. Health complaints from the old site included cough, chest tightness, sore throat, eye and nose irritation, and headaches. Qualitative analysis of heated raw materials used in the transfer process indicated vinyl-chloride (75014), hydrogen-chloride (7647010), formaldehyde (50000), phthalates, benzene (71432), hexane (110543), styrene (100425), and other chemicals. Benzene was found in concentrations ranging from for suspect human carcinogens be reduced as much as possible. Other chemicals were below the detection limit. Ventilation was adequate at the work site. Employees reported that symptoms had ameliorated since the company relocated. The author concludes that exposure to hazardous chemicals at the new work site were below recommended limits except for benzene. Recommendations to reduce problems if the rate of production increases or if problems arise similar to those that occurred at the old site are provided.
