  Occupational exposures of about 60 workers employed in fungicide production at the Calhio Chemical Company (SIC-2879), Perry, Ohio were investigated. Local 13860 of the United Steelworkers of America requested the study after expressing concern over the incidence of hypertension, tumors, lethargy, respiratory problems, kidney damage, vascular disease, gastrointestinal disorders, and skin and eye damage. The combined environmental and medical evaluation was conducted between August 12 and 14, 1980. Concentrations of Folpet (133073), phthalimide (85416), and tetrahydrophthalimide (85405) were well below the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists recommended criteria of 5 milligrams per cubic meter. A trace of carbon- disulfide was found but no other hazardous chemicals were detected. Among 66 current or former employees interviewed, 13 had a history of hypertension, 6 had heart attacks or related diseases, 10 had acute bronchitis, 2 had chronic bronchitis and 2 had pneumonia. These and other acute symptoms were nonspecific and not necessarily related to occupational exposure. The authors conclude that workers were not overexposed to any material in the workplace. Recommendations are for minimizing and controlling exposures and medical monitoring.
