Description:Workers' complaints of headaches, nausea, and dizziness at a spinal ward and operating room suite of the Veterans Administration Medical Center (SIC-2519), Bronx, New York were investigated. Hospital officials requested the survey. A walk through the facility and environmental sampling were performed on February 8, 1982. A total of about 2000 people are employed at the hospital and 160 are employed in 1E and 2E. Area nitrous-oxide (10024972) (N20) concentrations ranged from 2 to 85 parts per million (ppm) and two exceeded the NIOSH standard of 25ppm. The author concludes that headaches among hospital employees in the surveyed areas of the hospital are a problem and that they occur more often when exhaust fume smells are noted in the areas. Loading dock trucks are a potential source of exhaust fumes because the hospital's air handling unit is located near the loading dock. The author recommends replacement of exhaust hoses, use of scavenging equipment, sufficient oxygen flow, and a surveillance system to record loading dock traffic.
