Description:Noise and diesel exhaust at the Trailer Yard, United States Bulk Mail Center (SIC-4311), St. Louis, Missouri were investigated. Thirteen tractor trailer operators were employed at the time of the study. The study was requested by the safety manager and was performed between November 23 and 24, 1981. Personal breathing zone samples were collected, noise levels were measured, and workers were interviewed to pinpoint health problems. No particulate and gaseous sulfates and sulfites, nitric-oxide (10102439), nitrogen-dioxide (10102440), or carbon-monoxide (630080) were detected in the breathing samples. Noise levels ranged from 80.4 to 84.8 decibels compared to a NIOSH average noise limit of 85 decibels. None of the drivers reported health problems at the time of the study but four of ten said they thought that diesel exhaust probably caused eye irritation, particularly during hot and windless summer weather. The author concludes that no hazard exists from either noise levels or exhaust exposure. However, a noise monitoring program is recommended since noise levels closely approached the NIOSH recommended limit. Also, diesel engines should be thoroughly warmed up in an area that is well away from the docking area.
