Description:A possible case of heavy metal poisoning at N.P.C. Systems, Inc. (SIC-3545), Milford, New Hampshire was investigated. An employee requested the study which was performed in September 1981 and January 1982. The request stemmed from fear that an employee suffering from peripheral neuropathy and encephalomyelopathy had been poisoned by heavy metal exposure in the diamond bit department of the facility. Environmental sampling was conducted on January 29, 1982. Personal and area air samples were collected in the diamond room, at the furnace, and at the silver brazing operation. Nickel (7440020), cadmium (7440439), copper (7440508), and cobalt (7440484) were below the limit of detection for personal samples. Personal exposure to zinc (7440666) was 2.5 micrograms per cubic meter (mcg/m3). Area samples ranged from below the limit of detection for nickel and cobalt, to 2.5mcg/m3 for copper, 29.2mcg/m3 for cadmium, and 31.25mcg/m3 for zinc. The author concludes that current exposures to heavy metals were not dangerous.
