Description:Worker exposure to toxic metal fumes, flux fumes, and gases generated during routine welding and cutting operations at Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation Vesta No. 5 General Machine Shop (SIC- 1211) in Fredericksburg, Pennsylvania, was studied. The investigation was requested by the United Mine Workers of America and was performed on November 14 and 15, 1979. The study was prompted by worker concern over a possible excess of mortality among welders in the shop. A total of 17 welders and 1 blacksmith worked in the welding shop. Some welders were exposed to inorganic nickel (7440020) in concentrations higher than the NIOSH recommended standard of 15 micrograms per cubic meter (mg/m3). Most of the welders were exposed to hexavalent chromium (18540299) in concentrations above the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists standard of 0.5mg/m3. Three of five 15 minute personal samples exceeded the NIOSH recommended limit of 1.8mg/m3 for nitrogen-dioxide (10102440). It was concluded that there was significant overexposure to nickel, hexavalent chromium, and nitrogen-dioxide. If the shop were to reopen, recommendations involving local exhaust ventilation, other control measures and process design changes should be implemented.
