  Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for trichlorotrifluoroethane (76131) (freon) at Milk's Camp Industry (SIC-3674), Bonesteel, South Dakota in March 1983. The request for the evaluation was made by the management to assess a potential health hazard from exposure to freon in a vapor degreasing operation. The air samples showed freon concentrations ranging from 12 to 1328 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) with an average of 159mg/m3. The current OSHA standard is 7600mg/m3. All ten employees were interviewed. Only one employee had complaints which consisted of chest pains, respiratory irritation, dizziness, and headaches. The employee cleaned the vapor degreaser once a month. A respirator was available, but it was found to be in poor condition. The author concludes that although the air samples do not indicate over exposure, the employee reporting symptoms while cleaning the degreaser could be over exposed to freon. He recommends that all employees be informed of potential hazards from exposure to freon, and that a properly fitting half face respirator be provided to the worker who cleans the degreaser.
