  Personal air samples were analyzed for copper (7440508), iron-oxide (1332372), manganese (7439965), and zinc-oxide (1314132) fumes and total particulates at the E-Z Go Division of Textron, Incorporated (SIC-3711), in Augusta, Georgia in April, 1985. The evaluation was requested to investigate employee exposures to welding fumes in the small parts welding shop. Twenty four of 25 workers in the shop were interviewed. The face velocity at each of the 13 welding booths was measured. All metal or metal oxide fume and particulate concentrations were below their relevant standards. The face velocity for each of the welding booths was not adequate to capture the fumes generated by the welding operations. Reported symptoms included headache, nausea, eye irritation, welding flash burns to the eye, throat irritation, nasal irritation, and smoke related breathing difficulties. The authors conclude that workers in the welding shop are not overexposed to welding fumes. Recommendations include installing welding booths large enough to accommodate the largest parts, removing oil and cutting fluid from parts to be welded, and avoiding exposure to welding fumes.
