Description:Worker exposures to 6-acetoxy-2,4-dimethyl-m-dioxane (828002) (DMD) were investigated on March 4, 1982, at Sandoz Colors and Chemicals (SIC-2816) in East Hanover, New Jersey. The evaluation was requested by an unspecified individual on behalf of an unspecified number of workers. General and personal area air samples were analyzed for the DMD hydrolysis product, crotonaldehyde (123739). General area air sample crotonaldehyde (4170303) concentrations ranged from nondetectable to 3.2 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3), and two personal air sample measurements were 2.1 and 1.9mg/m3, respectively. No NIOSH standard was given, but the OSHA standard is 6mg/m3. The author concludes that no DMD hazard exists. He recommends that any exposure be prevented due to the possible carcinogenic potential of DMD and suggests the use of alternative antimicrobial agents.
