Description:Health hazards due to hydrogen-sulfide (7783064) (H2S) and carbon- disulfide (75150) (CS2) were evaluated at FMC Corporation (SIC-2869) Nitro, West Virginia in June and December 1972. Environmental samples of CS2 and H2S were obtained in the spinning and cutting areas. Fifteen H2S samples were collected with detector tubes. Thirty-six CS2 samples were collected with a midget bubbler impinger and analyzed spectrophotometrically. Twenty-five workers were interviewed and examined. H2S concentrations ranged from 0.72 to 1.25 parts per million (ppm) which was well below accepted standards
however, 12 CS2 samples were in excess of the 8-hour time weighted average of 20ppm, 7 were in excess of the maximum peak exposure limit of 100ppm, and 2 were in excess of 2000ppm. Medical evaluations indicated a majority of the workers were overexposed to CS2. The authors conclude that a serious health and safety hazard exists to all cuttermen, chargehands, and other workers in the immediate area. They recommend that respirators be furnished to all cuttermen. This should be a temporary control measure until proper engineering controls can be instituted.
