Description:A noise survey of New York City Fire Department (SIC-9224) equipment was conducted in November 1982. The evaluation was requested by the fire department to investigate selected noise sources found at the fire scene or on vehicles used to get to and from a fire scene. Tape recordings were made during simulated runs on a training road course and on one of the department's fire boats and were analyzed. Noise levels produced by sirens, air horns, and fire engines ranged from 81 to 118 A-weighted decibels (dBA) during the simulated runs. Noise exposures on the fire boat ranged from 81 to 113dBA. The OSHA standard for noise is 90dBA time weighted average exposure. The author concludes that a potential for overexposure to noise does exist for the fire department personnel. Recommendations include limiting the use of warning devices as much as legally and practically possible, relocating warning devices away from fire personnel on the vehicle, and implementing a hearing conservation program.
