  Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for tetrachloroethylene (127184) (perchloroethylene) (PCE) at Denver Laundry and Dry Cleaning (SIC-7216), Denver, Colorado in July, 1984. The evaluation was requested by a company representative to determine if a health hazard from exposure to PCE existed during the commercial laundry and dry cleaning processes. A noise evaluation was also requested. Time weighted average (TWA) PCE exposures were 45 and 64 parts per million (ppm). Ceiling PCE exposures ranged from 68 to 597ppm. The OSHA TWA and ceiling standards for PCE are 100 and 200ppm, respectively. Personal and area noise exposures ranged from 81 to 89 and 84 to 93 A-weighted decibels (dBA), respectively. The OSHA standard for noise is 90dBA. The author concludes that a health hazard exists due to overexposure to PCE and noise at the facility. Recommendations include replacing the present transfer system by a dry/to/dry closed system if possible, improving work practices, removing clothing from each machine at the same time, replacing or cleaning and oiling the bearings in the dryers, and establishing an educational program to instruct new employees on the hazards of chemical and noise exposure.
