Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for nitrous- oxide (10024972) at two oral surgery clinics in Holbrook and Brentwood, New York on July 30 to 31, 1984. The evaluation was requested by the dentists because of general concern regarding the extent of exposure to nitrous oxide. The Brentwood office was equipped with a waste anesthetic gas scavenging system. Breathing zone nitrous-oxide concentrations averaged 2,400 parts per million (ppm) during a 6-minute procedure at the Holbrook office and 830ppm during 5 minutes use at the Brentwood office. The NIOSH recommended standard for nitrous oxide is 50ppm. Environmental nitrous-oxide concentrations ranged from 85 to 315ppm at the Holbrook office and 30 to 270ppm at the Brentwood office. The author concludes that nitrous oxide poses a health hazard at both oral surgery clinics. Recommendations include checking the nitrous-oxide delivery and mixing systems at both clinics, installing a waste anesthetic gas scavenging system with a dedicated exhaust at the Holbrook office, and improving work practices at the Brentwood clinic.
