  Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for nitrous- oxide (10024972), halogenated anesthetic gases, and ethylene-oxide (9010791) at Porter Memorial Hospital (SIC-8062), Valparaiso, Indiana in April 1984. The evaluation was requested by the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration to investigate the exposure of operating room personnel to anesthetic gases and central supply employees to ethylene-oxide. Two of five breathing zones and four of 22 environmental nitrous-oxide samples exceeded the NIOSH recommended standard of 25 parts per million (ppm). One area sample for forane (26675467) and one personal sample for halothane (151677) exceeded the NIOSH recommended standard of 0.5ppm for halogenated anesthetic gases when used in conjunction with nitrous oxide. All ethylene-oxide concentrations were below the OSHA standard of 1ppm. The authors conclude that some of the operating room personnel are overexposed to halogenated anesthetic gases and nitrous oxide. Recommendations include performing better maintenance of the anesthesia equipment, improving the work practices of the anesthesiologists, and periodically checking the ethylene-oxide sterilizer system for leaks.
