Description:A health evaluation of the General Telephone Company of Michigan (SIC-4811), Alma, Michigan was conducted in May, 1984. The evaluation was requested by the company to investigate an apparent increase in adverse pregnancy outcomes among toll operators that could be linked to the use of video display terminals (VDT). Self administered questionnaires were given to 112 current and recently transferred toll operators and supervisory personnel to obtain reproductive histories. A total of 163 pregnancies occurred. Six out of 29 pregnancies resulted in miscarriages among employees exposed to VDT. Three miscarriages out of 29 pregnancies occurred in employees having no VDT exposure. Eight miscarriages out of 97 pregnancies occurred among employees prior to working at the company who had had no VDT exposure. One pregnancy ended in miscarriage of a subject who had VDT exposure before joining the company. Statistical treatment showed that the only variable associated with miscarriage was VDT work. The author concludes that a statistical excess of miscarriages has occurred among toll operators at the facility. Whether this excess is work related or not cannot be determined. No special reproductive policy is recommended. The ergonomic design of the VDT work stations should be improved.
