• Description:
  A review of accident records and an ergonomic assessment of potentially hazardous lifting tasks was performed at American Standard, Incorporated (SIC-3261), Wauregan, Connecticut, on July 20 and 21, 1982. The request was jointly submitted by management and labor and was part of a settlement agreement of a 1980 citation against the company for hazardous lifting conditions. The overall injury rate was 13.7 per 200000 work hours for a 13-month period. The most frequent injuries were back muscle sprain, strain, pull, or tear. The refire department had the highest injury rate (27.4 per 200000 hours), and the casting department having 19.9. Each job evaluated exceeded the maximum permissible limit for weight. The authors conclude that a health hazard exists in tasks that involve lifting, pushing, or pulling. They recommend the use of work practices and equipment to alleviate strain, mechanical lifts, and overhead drying areas, and programs matching job to worker.
